1. Google Places

You probably know what Google Places is – it is the local search results that Google shows at the top of the search results with the little red pins on the map. This was a huge development for small businesses because it gave them a chance to compete with much larger companies with much larger advertising budgets. Google knows that about 75% of the population are now using Google to find local businesses each month. Whether it is looking for a nearby store or getting directions, Google has replaced the yellow pages as the go-to place for information which is why it is at the top of our list of marketing ideas for small business.

In order to give its users a better experience, Google launched Google Places, which shows users results based on where they are or the city that they searched for. For example, if I searched for Anaheim dentist, I would get Google Places results at the top of the page showing me what Google considers the best local results for dentists in Anaheim.

So how does this help you as a business owner? First of all, search for your type of business and your city. If you are at or near the top of the Google Places listings – smile, sit back and relax, because there isn’t anything else that you need to do. 2. Start and Use Your Email List

Email marketing is one of the most effective and least used strategies for small businesses. Imagine being able to communicate with your customers on a regular basis – offering a special deal, introducing a new product or service, or asking them to refer their friends. That is what email marketing allows you to do and it is very powerful – if you do it right. This is a pretty simplified description, but this will give you a pretty good idea of how email marketing works.

  • Offer (usually on your website) something that is of value to potential and current customers in return for their contact information
  • The visitor will then enter his/her contact information and subscribes to your list
  • You email your new subscriber to give him/her the “item of value” that they are expecting
  • You now have the ability to send offers to this subscriber on a regular basis

I’ll give you a quick, real-world example. Let’s say that you own a restaurant as an example. On your website, you offer a coupon for 25% off a meal. A visitor is planning on visiting your restaurant, so he gives his name and email address in order to get the coupon. You then automatically (software does this) email him with the coupon that he can use. You then send him special deals and coupons on a weekly/monthly basis and he ends up returning several more times because of the deals. He also tells his friends about the great deals that he is getting and they sign up as well. Your list grows and grows and you have more repeat customers and more referrals as a result. 3. Ask for Reviews

Potential customers LOVE reviews. They look at places like yelp and Google reviews to see what people have to say about a business. While you can’t ask for only positive reviews, you can ask for reviews. I have seen many businesses that offer a coupon or even a small gift card to a place like Starbucks in exchange for a review. And it seems to work very well for them. They get a lot of reviews and customers get a better idea of kind of service that you offer. And, as an added bonus, Google seems to really love businesses that have reviews. It is quite often the businesses with more positive reviews that end up at the top of the Google Places results which is so important as a local business.
